The Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) approved the following homegrown standards developed by the BPS Technical Committee on Paper, board and pulps (BPS/TC 21).

The PNS 221:2019 Paper, board and pulps – Machine-finish uncoated book paper – Specification specifies the requirements for machine-finish uncoated book paper. A book paper is an uncoated paper used in the printing of books, magazines, pamphlets, folders, and brochures. During the development of PNS 221:2019, the BPS/TC 21 conducted a developmental testing having representative samples of uncoated book paper. These were tested by the Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI), Department of Science and Technology (DOST) using the current test procedures. The test results were the basis for updating the specifications.

The PNS 222:2019 Paper, board and pulps – Multipurpose copy paper – Specification specifies requirements for multipurpose copy paper popularly used at home, in school and workplace for copier and fax machines, and printing by laser, ink-jet, digital, offset and other forms of printing. Representative samples of copy paper were also tested by the FPRDI-DOST to classify multipurpose copy paper based on furnish.

The above standards will promote common understanding among stakeholders in the paper and board industry and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

BPS/TC 21 is composed of representatives from the Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry of the Philippines, Department of Science and Technology – Forest Product Research and Development Institute, University of the Philippines Los Baños – College of Forestry and Natural Resources, Department of Budget and Management – Procurement Service, National Association of Consumers, Inc., Trust International Paper Corp., and Jedaric Chemicals Corp.
