DTI creates Technical Committee for forest products standards

DTI creates Technical Committee for forest products standards

Stakeholders from different organizations gathered at the New World Manila Bay Hotel, Malate, Manila for the kick-off meeting of the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS)/Technical Committee (TC) 78 on Forest and Forest Products.

The DTI-BPS created the BPS/TC 78 to develop (and review) the Philippine National Standards on forest and forest products. The creation of TC 78 was initiated by the Philippine Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development, Inc. (PCEPSDI). PCEPSDI is a non-stock, non-profit and non-government organization that aims to initiate, promote, support and/or finance projects, programs and activities to cleanse, improve, rehabilitate and develop the environment, and to maintain the environment in a clean, healthy, and sustainable state.

The aim of creating the TC 78 is to act as the standards-setting committee that is tasked to develop/adopt relevant standards for the development of Philippine Forest Certification System (PFCS) including forest management system standards and chain of custody standards.

The forest management system standards and chain of custody standards are the two (2) basic standards needed in the development of the PFCS. A chain of custody relies on a system which tracks the transportation of material from the forest to the final product. Such system will help in the prevention of illegal logging; resolve issues regarding security of tenure; balance production and protection of forest; and, help boost the local forest industry.

The BPS TC 78 is composed of representatives from the Academe, Trade and Industry, Consumers, Professional Association(s), Research Institution(s), Government Agencies, and, Testing Institution(s).

The TC members are Philippine Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development, Inc. (PCEPSDI) / Green Choice Philippines, Philippine Wood Producers Association (PWPA), Philippine Green Building Council (PhilGBC), Philippine Bamboo Foundation, Inc. (PBFI), Integrated Forest Management Association of the Philippines (IFMAP), Nationwide Association of Consumers (NACI), Pambansang Kilusan ng mga Samahang Magsasaka (PAKISAMA), National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), United Architects of the Philippines, DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI), SGS Philippines, DTI-Philippine Accreditation Bureau (DTI-PAB), and DENR-Forest Management Bureau (DENR-FMB)

Stakeholders from different organizations during the kick-off meeting of the BPS/Technical Committee 78 Technical Committee on Forest and Forest Products at the New World Manila Bay Hotel, Malate, Manila.

DTI-BPS OIC Marimel D. Porciuncula emphasized, “The main objective of the Technical Committee is to develop standards for sustainable forest management and chain of custody of forest products. Essentially, through standards, consumers can identify, purchase and use wood, paper and other forest products produced from well-managed forests.”
