The Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) reactivated the BPS Technical Committee (TC) 60 on Information Technology last 02 February 2017.
A quorum was established from the various stakeholders from the academe, government, consumer, testing institutions, and, industries. They included the National Privacy Commission (NPC), Global Knowledge Management Center Philippines, Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT), Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC)-Manila, Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), Philippine National IT Standards (PhilNITs) Foundation, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), TUV Rheinland Phils. Inc., and, IT Hured Phils. Inc.
As the secretariat, the DTI-BPS, through Engr. Mario U. Gaudiano, Chief of the BPS-Standards Development Division, called the first meeting to order. The DTI-BPS presented the International Standardization of Information Technology by the International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC). Moreover, the DTI-BPS discussed the membership status of the Philippines to the ISO/IEC/Joint Technical Committee 1 – Information Technology and its subcommittees. The Philippines is an Observer-member to the ISO/IEC/JTC 1 through the DTI-BPS.
The National Privacy Commission (NPC), an attached agency of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), initiated the need to reactivate the BPS/TC 60 for the active participation in the international meetings of ISO/IEC JTC 1 subcommittee 27 - IT Security Techniques, Working Group 5.
During the meeting, DTI-BPS Officer-in-Charge Atty. Marimel D. Porciuncula underscored, “The NPC’s request was a welcome development as the Bureau aligns its standardization programs to the DTI Prosperity Plan 2017-2022 and identifies the ICT as one of the industry sectors under the Department’s major strategy for priority development and promotion.”
The members elected Deputy Privacy Commissioner Damian Domingo O. Mapa of the National Privacy Commission and Chief Executive Officer Roselle P. Reig of Global Knowledge Management Center Philippines as the BPS/TC 60 Chairperson and Vice-chairperson, respectively.

For the BPS/TC 60 2017 Work Program, the committee checked on the list of published ISO Standards under ISO/IEC/JTC 1 and its subcommittees. BPS/TC 60 Chairperson Commissioner Mapa, tasked the members to identify the priority standards of their respective organizations that will be considered in the 2017 work plan.
