IEC experts present in Technical Committee meetings

IEC experts present in Technical Committee meetings

Experts from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) presented on IEC 60364 on electrical wiring devices and the current work related to energy efficiency in the Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) Technical Committee (TC) meetings last 04 April 2018.

TC 77 Members attended the TC meeting with IEC. (from left to right): Avelino T. Molina Jr. (BPS), Eduardo Pascual (Edison Electric), Nico Echavarria (Schneider), Gem Tan (IIEE), Jessie Robert Mallonga (IEC-NCP Acting President), Rhea D. Bunao (Schneider),    Ma. Sholly Louie Rose Mabango (BPS), Conrado Binondo (Elecdes Trading and TC 77 Chairman), Paul Loke (Schneider – Singapore), Philippe Vollet (IEC/Schneider – France), Justo Lopez (IIEE), Rodolfo Renolla (RR Electroplumb), Samson Chiong (Eagle Electric), Gideon Tan (Yu Eng Kao Electrical and Supply), Gerard Venezuela (BFP), Nestor Rivera (Cagayan State University) and Reynaldo Del Mundo (Schneider)

The IEC experts discussed with the DTI-BPS TC on Electrical Installation and Protection against Electric Shock or DTI-BPS/TC 77 and the DTI-BPS TC on Electrical Wiring Devices or DTI-BPS/TC 10.

The IEC experts, Mr Paul Loke from Singapore and Mr. Philippe Vollet from France, discussed the proposed development of application guides based on IEC 60364 on electrical wiring devices such as motor protection, lighting circuits, uninterruptable power supply, generators and automatic transfer switch, and, the current work related to energy efficiency in IEC which is the maintenance of IEC 60364-8-1: Low voltage electrical installations – Part 8-1: Energy efficiency.

This international standard, IEC 60364-8-1, provides additional requirements, measures and recommendations for the design, erection and verification of all types of low-voltage electrical installation including local production and storage of energy for optimizing the overall efficient use of electricity. It introduces requirements and recommendations for the design of an electrical installation within the framework of an energy efficiency management approach in order to get the best permanent functionally equivalent service for the lowest electrical energy consumption and the most acceptable energy availability and economic balance.

The international standard on energy efficiency has been developed especially for electrical installations. The IEC 60364 emphasizes the importance of energy efficiency in the design of electrical installations, in the same way as safety and implementation rules. In the manufacturing industry, energy efficiency can be defined by the quantity of energy (kWh), essential to manufacture a product. For an electrical installation, its aim is to optimize the use of electricity that includes to minimize energy losses, use electricity at the right time and at the lower cost, and, maintain the performance all along the installation life cycle.

The DTI-BPS/TC 77 Chairman, Mr. Conrado Binondo, in behalf of the TC members, expressed their support on the said proposal and their intent to attend the upcoming IEC/TC 64 meeting to be held in Sydney, Australia on 09-11 October 2018.

Mr. Jessie Robert P. Mallonga, acting president of International Electrotechnical Committee-National Committee of the Philippines closed the meeting and extended his appreciation for the time and effort shared by the resource speakers.

TC 10 Members attendees (from left to right): Reynaldo Del Mundo (Schneider), Nico Echavarria (Schneider), Avelino T. Molina Jr. (BPS), Conrado Binondo (Elecdes Trading), Jessie Robert Mallonga (IEC-NCP Acting President), Gem Tan (IIEE and TC 10 Chairman), Imelda Marquez (Bticino), Ma. Sholly Louie Rose Mabango (BPS), Rhea D. Bunao (Schneider), Edwin Rondillos (Yatai International Corp.), Samson Chiong (Eagle Electric), Kyle Chua (Eagle Electric), Philippe Vollet (Schneider – France), Gideon Tan (Yu Eng Kao Electrical and Supply), Paul Loke (IEC/Schneider – Singapore), and Eduardo Pascual (Edison Electric)

The DTI-BPS is the National Standards Body of the Philippines. It is the Philippines’ member to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It develops, adopts, reviews, and promulgates the Philippine National Standards through technical committees that comprise representatives from the academe, government, consumer, testing institutions, and, industries.
