DTI-BPS conducts forum on product recall standard

The increasing popularity of online shopping has made it easier for Filipinos to purchase goods and request for services without leaving their home. Truly, this is the time to enjoy stress-free shopping minus the hassle of commute, jam-packed malls and long lines at the cashier.

Taking note that everyone is a consumer and as part of the celebrations of the World Standards Day (WSD) and National Standards Week (NSW), the DTI through its Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS)’ Technical Committee on Consumer Policy (BPS/TC 81), conducted a Public Forum on Consumer Product Recall Standards at the Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC) in Pasay City last 22 October 2018.

The forum, attended by government regulatory agencies, industry organizations, testing institutions, and consumer organizations aims to discuss consumer-related issues to help relevant government authorities develop and enhance effective consumer policies.

Atty. Ruth B. Castelo, Undersecretary of the Consumer Protection Group emphasized, “while we promote a healthy environment for businesses, we also have to balance the concerns of our consumers with respect to their safety. Two (2) of the eight (8) basic consumer rights tell us that consumers have the right to safety against goods or services that may cause health hazards and, the right to redress or to be compensated for misinterpretation or unsatisfactory services. We cannot have a scenario where the safety of our consumers are at risk.”.

The BPS/TC 81 mirrors the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Committee on Consumer Policy (ISO COPOLCO) to identify standardization areas of priority to consumers and propose new areas for where there is a need for enhanced consumer protection.
