New adopted standard to help boost the local sugar industry

New adopted standard to help boost the local sugar industry

The Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) adopted the latest edition of the Philippine National Standard (PNS) / Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standard (BAFS) 82:2018 White sugar – Specification.

In 2010, the standard was revised in order to boost the local sugar industry and ensure that the locally produced and traded sugars meet the current international standards for safety and quality. The PNS/BAFS 82:2018 which cancels and replaces its 2010 version, sets the specification of white sugar for human consumption.

The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) requested the assistance of the BAFS in 2016 to lead the revision of said standard and to update the laboratory procedures for the analysis of sugar. A Technical Working Group (TWG) that led the revision of the standard was created through Special Order No. 239 Series of 2017 with representations from the Department of Agriculture (DA), namely BAFS and SRA, and members from the private sector.

This standard applies to white sugar variants (premium grade, standard grade and plantation white sugar) that are intended for human consumption. It includes white sugar sold directly to the consumers and used as ingredient in food. This standard, if implemented properly, will ensure the quality of white sugar in the market and these products that use it as raw material.

The DTI-BPS is the National Standards Body of the Philippines. It is the country’s member to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
