DTI adopts the International Standard on chain of custody of wood and wood-based products

DTI adopts the International Standard on chain of custody of wood and wood-based products

The Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) approved the adoption of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Standard on Chain of custody of wood and wood-based products, as a Philippine National Standard (PNS/ISO 38200:2019).

The PNS ISO 38200:2019 Chain of custody of wood and wood-based products provides a framework for implementing a chain of custody system of passing on information regarding wood and wood-based products, cork and lignified materials other than wood, such as bamboo, from the source to the finished product. A chain of custody system is a process by which information about materials can be tracked throughout the entire or parts of the supply chain, including transportation, receipt, production, sale, resale and output declaration.

DTI-BPS Director James E. Empeño underscores, “The growing trend of environmental awareness among consumers comes with the demand to know the origins of the wood that they buy. The PNS ISO 38200:2019 and its method of traceability, therefore, will help the businesses favour timber that comes from legal sources.”

The DTI-BPS is the National Standards Body of the Philippines. It is the Philippines’ member to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The PNS ISO 38200:2019 is available for purchase at the DTI-BPS’ SDC, located at the DTI Main Office, 3F Trade and Industry Building, 361 Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue, Makati City. To purchase, clients may download the PNS Request Form from the DTI-BPS website, http://www.bps.dti.gov.ph, fill up the form and present it to the BPS-SDC for processing and payment.
