DTI, ULSE to launch standard on parol

In celebration of National Standards Week (NSW) and in line with the government’s efforts to strengthen safety this Christmas season, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through the Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS) is set to launch the Philippine National Standards (PNS) on Parol on 13 October 2025 at City of San Fernando in Pampanga and conduct series of related activities on 14 and 15 October 2025, in partnership with UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE).
With the theme “Bright Traditions, Safe Celebrations,” the parol launching event will introduce PNS 2296-1:2025, the country’s first-ever Philippine National Standard for Parol, outlining its scope, construction and testing requirements, and prescribed product markings. The launch also aims to spotlight DTI’s key thrusts on supporting businesses including the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in increasing their competitiveness and accessing international markets through OTOP and Tatak Pinoy. The event will also highlight the local government efforts that local business thrives and underscore the vital role of standards in promoting product quality, public safety, and MSME competitiveness.
During the program, a ceremonial lighting, parol exhibition and plenary discussion will also be held to foster stakeholder dialogue on the role of standards in the parol-making industry while showcasing lanterns that demonstrate conformity to the newly published standard.
To complement the event, a separate hands-on training will be conducted at the BPS Testing Laboratory for test engineers, BPS Technical Committee members, and other relevant stakeholders to capacitate them on the test requirements for the parol. The training aims to enhance consistency and reliability in conformity assessment, uphold impartiality and integrity to build stakeholder confidence, and help organizations align their practices with established standards.
As part of the DTI-BPS and ULSE’s continued collaboration, a BPS-ULSE Stakeholder Recognition and Awarding Ceremony with the theme “Collaboration in Motion: Driving Meaningful Change” will also take place on October 14 to recognize local and international stakeholders who have made significant contributions to BPS and ULSE programs and celebrate milestones achieved through strong partnerships.
Serving as the country’s National Standards Body, the DTI-BPS develops and implements product standards, promotes standardization activities, and ensures that products in the market meet quality and safety standards for consumers.
