DTI-BPS aims to help reduce road accidents with new traffic safety standards

The Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) has adopted and approved as Philippine National Standards (PNS) the following standards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on road traffic safety:

PNS ISO 39001:2020 Road traffic safety (RTS) management systems — Requirements with guidance for use (ISO Published 2012) ICS. 03.100.70; 03.220.20

PNS ISO 39002:2020 Road traffic safety — Good practices for implementing commuting safety management (ISO Published 2020) ICS. 03.220.20

PNS ISO 39001:2020 specifies requirements for a road traffic safety (RTS) management system to enable an organization that interacts with the road traffic system to reduce death and serious injuries related to road traffic crashes which it can influence. PNS ISO 39002:2020, on the other hand, provides guidelines for good practices that can be adopted by organizations for the implementation of commuting safety management.

In his statement, DTI-BPS Director Neil P. Catajay stresses the need of the country for a road traffic safety (RTS) management system to complement existing legislations on road safety. "The Philippines still struggles with high road traffic incidence despite enforcement of traffic laws. For 2019, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported a total of 121,771 traffic incidents in Metro Manila. 372 of which ended with fatalities. With the adoption as PNS of these expert-developed international standards, the standards become more accessible to national government agencies, local government units and other public and private organizations involved in traffic management to help them improve their processes and make guided decisions. We hope in a way, this helps in the reduction of road accidents moving forward." 

The adoption of these standards contribute to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) No. 03 – Good Health & Well-Being; No. 11 – Sustainable Cities & Communities; and No. 12 – Responsible Consumption and production.
