Makati, Philippines – The Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) kicked-off the nationwide celebration of National Standards Week (NSW) with an awarding ceremony recognizing the longstanding BPS stakeholders from various industries and agencies that serve as exemplary models of compliance with Philippine National Standards (PNS). The event also launched the Certified Products Fair (CPF) and outlined the week’s standardization activities, emphasizing the importance of upholding standards to protect consumers.

“Standards are not merely technical guidance – they mold the quality of our products and services we offer to our fellow Filpinos”, said this week’s DTI OIC Secretary and Chief-of-Staff Undersecretary Blesila A. Lantayona. “At DTI, upholding these standards remains a core value as we aim to ensure trust, safety, quality, and efficiency across various industries, enabling us to navigate a complex world with confidence.”

In commemoration of the World Standards Day (WSD) and Consumer Welfare Month (CWM), observed annually in October, DTI-BPS conducts the NSW from October 8 to 14, as established by Proclamation No. 1327, series of 1974. This year’s NSW adopts the World Standards Day theme, ‘Shared Vision for a Better World: Spotlight on SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure in the Age of AI.’ Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9, the theme highlights the need to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation. These events emphasize the pivotal role  of standards compliance in safeguarding the public.

The NSW kick-off ceremony recognized five (5) longest serving BPS Technical Committee members from industry agencies including: Ms. Cecilia Ramos from Meycauayan Jewelry Industry; Mr. Alex Loinaz from Clean Air Advocates; Engr. Ramon Cuizon from Red Clover Consultants Inc.; Mr. Wellington Tong from PISI - Pag-asa Steel; Engr. Gem Tan from Fujihaya Electric and the ten (10) oldest Philippine Standards (PS) License holders including: Nippon Sanso Ingasco, Inc.; Concepcion-Carrier Air Conditioning; Republic Cement and Building Materials Inc. by CRH-Aboitiz Company; Panasonic; Steel Asia Manufacturing Corporation; Yokohama Tire Philippines Inc.; Phelps Dodge Phils; Linde Philippines; Hocheng Philippines Corporation; and Cathay Pacific Steel Corporation (CAPASCO).

“We laud our awardees for their commitment to championing our campaign against substandard products, promoting a healthier and safer nation for our fellow Filipinos. Our PS licensee holders serve as exemplary models of compliance and dedication to quality,” said the Fair Trade Group (FTG) Supervising Head Assistant Secretary Agaton Teodoro O. Uvero.

In addition to recognizing BPS stakeholders, the DTI-BPS's Certified Products Fair (CPF) will showcase compliant and high-quality products, including helmets, Christmas lights, and various household appliances, available for public purchase from October 7 to 10, 2024.

BPS Director Neil P. Catajay also encouraged the consumers to only avail certified products from the market, “In this age of proliferation of substandard products, we encourage consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing products from the market. Do not compromise your family’s safety for the sake of saving money. Always check and verify the presence of mandatory marks such as the Philippine Standard (PS) Quality and/or Safety Mark and Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) Sticker to ensure the products meet safety standards.”

DTI-BPS serves as the National Standards Body (NSB) of the Philippines. It is mandated to develop, promulgate, and implement standards for all products in the country to promote standardization activities and ensure the manufacture, production, and distribution of quality products for consumer protection. Established on 20 June 1964 through Republic Act (RA) 4109, also known as the Standards Law, the Bureau plays a vital role in safeguarding public welfare.
