Understanding the necessity to ensure the safety of construction materials in our earthquake-prone territory, the Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) has adopted several standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for ceramic tiles. The DTI-BPS aims to reinstate ceramic tiles in its list of products under Mandatory Certification.
The new Philippine National Standards (PNS) include PNS ISO 13006:2019 Ceramic tiles — Definitions, classification, characteristics and marking, which will serve as the basis for coverage of the DTI-BPS' draft Department Administrative Order (DAO) on the New Technical Regulations concerning the Mandatory Product Certification of Ceramic Tiles. PNS ISO 13006:2019 defines the terms and establishes the classifications, characteristics and marking requirements for ceramic tiles of the best commercial quality (first quality). The standard is not applicable to tiles made by other than normal processes of extrusion or dry pressing and is also not applicable to decorative accessories or trim such as edges, corners, skirting, capping, coves, beads, steps, curved tiles and other accessory pieces or mosaics (i.e. any piece that can fit into a square, the side of which is less than 7 cm).
The following adopted ISO standards describe the test procedures required to determine the product characteristics listed in PNS ISO 13006:2019:
- PNS ISO 10545-2:2019 Ceramic tiles — Part 2: Determination of dimensions and surface quality (ISO Published 2018) - This standard cancels and replaces PNS ISO 10545-2:2013 (ISO Published 1995 with Cor. 1:1997) ICS: 91.100.23
- PNS ISO 10545-4:2019 Ceramic tiles — Part 4: Determination of modulus of rupture and breaking strength (ISO Published 2019) - This standard cancels and replaces PNS ISO 10545-4:2018 (ISO Published 2014) ICS: 91.100.23
- PNS ISO 10545-5:2019 Ceramic tiles — Part 5: Determination of impact resistance by measurement of coefficient of restitution (ISO Published 1996 with Cor. 1:1997) - This standard cancels and replaces PNS ISO 10545-5:2013 (ISO Published 1996 with Cor. 1:1997) ICS: 91.100.23
- PNS ISO 10545-6:2019 Ceramic tiles — Part 6: Determination of resistance to deep abrasion for unglazed tiles (ISO Published 2010) - This standard cancels and replaces PNS ISO 10545-6:2013 (ISO Published 2010) ICS: 91.100.23
- PNS ISO 10545-7:2019 Ceramic tiles — Part 7: Determination of resistance to surface abrasion for glazed tiles (ISO Published 1996) - This standard cancels and replaces PNS ISO 10545-7:2013 (ISO Published 1996) ICS: 91.100.23
- PNS ISO 10545-9:2019 Ceramic tiles — Part 9: Determination of resistance to thermal shock (ISO Published 2013) - This standard cancels and replaces PNS ISO 10545-9:2013 (ISO Published 2013) ICS: 91.100.23
- PNS ISO 10545-10:2019 Ceramic tiles — Part 10: Determination of moisture expansion (ISO Published 1995) - This standard cancels and replaces PNS ISO 10545-10:2013 (ISO Published 1995) ICS: 91.100.23
- PNS ISO 10545-11:2019 Ceramic tiles — Part 11: Determination of crazing resistance for glazed tiles (ISO Published 1994) - This standard cancels and replaces PNS ISO 10545-11:2013 (ISO Published 1994) ICS: 91.100.23
- PNS ISO 10545-12:2019 Ceramic tiles — Part 12: Determination of frost resistance (ISO Published 1995 with Cor. 1:1997) - This standard cancels and replaces PNS ISO 10545-12:2013 (ISO Published 1995 with Cor. 1:1997) ICS: 91.100.23
- PNS ISO 10545-15:2019 Ceramic tiles — Part 15: Determination of lead and cadmium given off by glazed tiles (ISO Published 1995) - This standard cancels and replaces PNS ISO 10545-15:2013 (ISO Published 1995) ICS: 91.100.23
- PNS ISO 10545-16:2019 Ceramic tiles — Part 16: Determination of small colour differences (ISO Published 2010) - This standard cancels and replaces PNS ISO 10545-16:2013 (ISO Published 2010) ICS: 91.100.23
The following adopted ISO standards provide for the prescribed guidelines in installing ceramic tiles:
- PNS ISO/TR 17870-1:2019 Ceramic tiles — Guidelines for installation — Part 1: Installation of ceramic wall and floor tiles (ISO Published 2015) ICS 91.100.23
- PNS ISO/TR 17870-2:2019 Ceramic tiles — Guidelines for installation — Part 2: Installation of thin ceramic wall and floor tiles and panels (ISO Published 2015) ICS 91.100.23
The abovementioned standards were adopted through the recommendation of the BPS Technical Committee on Ceramics and Ceramic Products (BPS/TC 29). These standards support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) on Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (Goal 9).
