In line with its commitment to continuously improve the quality of consumer products in the country, the Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) has adopted and approved as Philippine National Standard (PNS) the standard of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on woven polypropylene sacks.

PNS ISO 23560:2019 Woven polypropylene sacks for bulk packaging of foodstuffs, published by ISO in 2015, specifies the general characteristics, requirements, and methods of test for woven polypropylene (PP) sacks. It is applicable to woven PP sacks, having a capacity of 50 kg or 25 kg, intended for the transport and storage of foodstuffs, such as cereals, sugar, and pulses.

The woven polypropylene sack is more commonly known as the plastic sack used in packaging rice and other grains. The container is made of woven polypropylene (PP) fabric, closed at one end, in certain cases combined with other flexible materials used, for instance, for the liner to provide the properties required for filling, storage, and distribution of the packaged commodity. It protects products from spoilage and contamination, extends the shelf life, and ensures safe storage.

The adoption of this standard is part of the DTI-Consumer Protection Group (DTI-CPG) Breakthrough Goals for 2019 on the Adoption of Standards for Consumer Products and contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) No. 3: Good Health and Well-being.
